Writing contest entries sought

Aspiring writers have only until April 22 to submit their entries into Short on Words- the short story, poetry writing contest celebrating its 10th anniversary- ninth edition. Submissions into the contest are now being accepted from across Michigan and around the country with a new online submission tool.

The competition is calling on aspiring authors of all ages to create unique prose about one of 10 photographs taken by Dr. William Demray, founder of Preservation Dental in Northville.

"We're hoping the photographs inspire you to stop, sit in your favorite place and just start writing.  Anything. The first thing that comes into your head that speaks to you in some way and starts the creative juices flowing," noted Demray. Preservation Dental is again sponsoring the competition, in conjunction with the annual Northville Arts & Acts Festival.

Writers can enter a poem or short story - 1,500 words or less, using one of the subject photos selected for the competition. Proceeds from the $10 entry fee benefit the Northville Art House, a 501(c)3 non-profit art facility.

There are two categories: ages 17 and under and ages 18 and older. The cash awards for each age category are $100 for first prize, $50 for second place and $25 for third place. Winners will be announced at an Author Brunch on Saturday, June 18 at the Northville Art House.
