All Canton primary ballots included in final election reports

All ballots cast in the Aug. 4 primary election in Canton Township have been counted, recorded and included in the official results certified by the Wayne County Board of Canvassers.

More than 800 absentee ballots were initially omitted from the unofficial election night reporting totals, according to the Canton Township Clerk’s office. Those 823 ballots were discovered during the official review of the tabulations by the Wayne County board and have now been properly cast, scanned and tabulated in the voting total reports.

Election officials explained that the impacted ballots came from 10 township precincts and the discrepancy was caused by an involving the rollers on two high-speed absentee ballot scanners used to tabulate ballots. Election workers moved additional batches of ballots to a second high-speed scanner, but election officials say that system couldn't accept two batches with identical batch names.

As a result, according to officials, some ballots were tabulated but not included in the election night reporting. That situation has been corrected and the updated totals submitted for certification.

A spokesman noted that the clerk’s staff is preparing equipment and procedural updates ahead of the November 2026 general election, including tabulation methods, to prevent any possible recurrence of the incident.

No ballots were omitted from the official certified results, officials stated.
