Rotary grant  funds fire safety equipment

Sumpter Township firefighters and residents will be safer during emergency situations thanks to the Cozzad Grant Program of the Belleville Rotary Club. The grant program recently funded the purchase of new safety equipment for the Sumpter Township Fire Department including two Blackline Safety G8 gas monitors and two MSA RIT Packs.

The gas monitors will help firefighters quickly detect dangerous gases during gas leak and carbon monoxide calls, fire department officials said. The devices will also monitor hydrogen cyanide (HCN), a toxic gas that can be present after a fire, helping keep firefighters safe during overhaul operations.

The new RIT Packs provide an emergency air supply for firefighters if they experience an air pack problem while working inside a hazardous environment.

The new equipment will be housed on the two frontline fire engines, fire department officials said and will be used to help protect firefighters, Sumpter Township residents and mutual aid partners.
