For the 31st consecutive year, local businesses were honored for displays of flowers and plants in the city, adding to the character of the community. This year, members of the commission received flowers and plants for the city efforts on June 2, just after nurseries were allowed to reopen by the governor. The plants were installed in containers and distributed at key sites in the city by commission volunteers who worked as a group, but took recommended safety precautions, working at safe distances and wearing masks.
The volunteers worked with services provided by the Downtown Development Authority (DDA) for design and purchasing, and with the Department of Public Works (DPW) for watering and supplies. The dedicated group of 11 volunteers led by Beautification Commission Chairperson Diane Pittaway put in extra effort to revitalize the downtown area with bursts of colors on every block.
In addition to the hands-on work of planting and regular weeding, the commissioners decided to proceed with the annual beautification awards and established a judging scheduled and visited area locales to rank the gardens and outdoor spaces in the city.
“We had waited to see how the businesses would recover from the coronavirus shut-down. If you've walked through downtown, you can see that we never should have doubted the resilience of our business community,” said Pittaway.
“We awarded 32 business and civic organizations and the city never looked more beautiful.”
The coronavirus did force the commission to cancel the annual luncheon hosted by the Northville Rotary Club when the winners would have been recognized. This year, the winners received certificates by mail and signs at the award winning locations.
