Visitors to Heritage Park in Canton Township will now be greeted by a newly installed Peace Pole, the universal symbol of peace bearing the message “May Peace Prevail on Earth” in 12 of the most commonly spoken languages in Canton Township: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Gujarati, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Punjabi, Spanish, and Urdu.

A dedication ceremony took place Aug. 3 to celebrate the installation of this 8-foot standing vigil in the newly created Heritage Park Peace Pole Plaza, which was erected as a symbol to promote peace, togetherness, and harmony in a tranquil area where park visitors can congregate for individual or group reflection, township officials said.

“We've created this special plaza to promote, educate, and advocate for peace,” said Canton Supervisor Anne Marie Graham-Hudak.  “Now more than ever before, we must all come together in a spirit of peace, love, mutual respect, and understanding. It's important to value every person from every culture, religion, race, and background.  This new Peace Pole exemplifies a collective belief that we should all strive for peace not only in our community, but throughout the entire world.”

In the spirit of peace and harmony, the Canton community stands with more than 250,000 Peace Poles around the globe to demonstrate a commitment to foster peace in the world. This international symbol of peace presents a unifying message in the recently completed Heritage Park Peace Pole Plaza, which has been transformed into a welcoming space with landscaping that was made possible with donor support provided by: Iltefat Hamzavi, MD FAAD - Hamzavi/Dermatology Specialists and Pilz Automation Safety, L.P.  Additional contributions were also provided by Geneva Presbyterian Church, St. Thomas a'Becket Catholic Church, and the Rotary Club of Canton.

The Heritage Park Peace Pole Plaza, which is now the permanent home to the wooden peace pole, is located at the intersection of Civic Center Boulevard and Veterans Way.

Heritage Park is one of the premier township amenities where visitors can enjoy 105 acres of green space, including:  two playscapes, a splash pad, four pavilions, a picturesque gazebo, two large ponds, walking paths, an amphitheater, baseball diamonds, soccer fields, a sand volleyball court, fishing area, and much more. officials said.
