Mother sent for competency hearing in stabbing

An Inkster mother has been ordered to undergo a competency examination by the court in connection with the stabbing death of her 3-year-old son.
Atiya Nina Muhammed, 26, is facing charges of  first degree premeditated murder, felony murder, first degree child abuse and torture. Each of the charges carries a maximum penalty of life in prison upon conviction.
No bail is allowed in first-degree murder charges and Muhammed remains in custody at the Wayne County Jail.

She was arrested May 6, the same day her 3-year-old son, Zion Reid, was found dead in the home the two occupied in the 26440 block of Lehigh Street in Inkster. Family members had gone to the home to check on the welfare of the mother and son when Muhammed failed to answer repeated phone calls over several days. Family members entered the home with a key and discovered the child's body in a back bedroom.
Inkster police officers were dispatched to the scene at about 2:44 p.m. and Muhammed was initially reported missing, but was arrested at about 6 p.m. later the same day in a cooperative police effort
The Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office determined the child died from multiple stab wounds and blunt force trauma injuries.
Muhammed was referred for the competency examination at a May 20 court appearance in Wayne County Circuit Court.
