Patient stabs employee at Reuther psychiatric facility

Michigan State Police were called to the Walter Reuther Psychiatric Hospital on Palmer Road in Westland last week in response to the stabbing of an employee by a patient.

Troopers were called to the facility at 1:55 p.m. Feb. 8, according to police reports of the incident.

The patient allegedly retrieved a piece of metal from the ceiling in his room and hid it in the waistband of his pants.

He then approached an employee in the hallway of the facility and without warning stabbed the man repeatedly in the neck and shoulder area, according to reports of the incident.

The assailant was restrained by other patients and staff members, according to officials, and the injured man transported to a nearby hospital by Westland emergency responders. After medical treatment, he was expected to recuperate from the non-life-threatening injuries sustained in the attack, according to reports.

The name of the patient involved has not been released by authorities but will be included in an investigation report which will be submitted to the office of the Wayne County prosecutor, according to police sources.
