Entries sought for annual city Scarecrow Contest

Downtown Romulus could soon be a pretty scary place to visit as the annual exhibit of scarecrows is displayed.
Local artisans have only until Sept. 27 to deliver their finished contest entries to the Romulus Department of Public Works. Families, businesses, organizations and individuals are all eligible to enter the competition, which began in 2015 and continues to grow each year. There is no fee to enter, but a 6-foot-3-inch scarecrow frame is available to purchase for $5 at city hall while supplies last.

Scarecrows will be displayed in the downtown Romulus District from Oct. 1 through Nov. 1 and participants must pre-register as space is limited. Registration may be completed in person or Romulus City Hall during regular business hours or submitted by email at communtyservices@romulusgov.com.
All scarecrows must be designed so that they will stand upright and supplied with materials necessary to display them in an upright position. Commercially made scarecrows are not allowed and the scarecrows should be durably constructed s they could be subjected to severe weather. Entrants are required to monitor the state of their scarecrows for the duration of the exhibit.
The scarecrows must be in good taste and appropriate for viewing by the public and families and must not contain adult, political or religious themes. No frightening, scary, violent, gruesome or bloody entries will be accepted, city officials said.
Display locations of the scarecrows will be determined by city personnel. Business owners or residents who wish to display their entry in front of their location downtown may do so without bringing the scarecrow to city hall although pre-registration is still required by Sept. 27.  Any entry not pre-registered will be removed, organizers cautioned.
Public voting for favorite scarecrows will begin Oct. 7 and continue until 4 p.m. Nov. 1. Voting is open to the public and will be done online in a photo album of the City of Romulus facebook page or in-person at Romulus City hall as well as at the Fall Family Fun Festival Oct. 18.
Scarecrows must be reclaimed by sponsors between Nov. 2 and Nov. 4. Those not reclaimed will be removed and discarded by the city.
