As the coronavirus sweeps through the nation and the world, Romulus Community Schools continues to provide breakfast, lunch, and educational lessons to students in Romulus and Inkster.
While many public school districts across Michigan are offering “After discussing the immediate needs of our students, we knew our families would be best served if we provided a food delivery option,” said Nicole Crockett, district interim superintendent of schools. “We have almost 100 volunteers, over 20 bus drivers and aides to make daily deliveries possible.”
During the mandated school closure, some bus drivers and volunteers start as early as 7 a.m.
“If communications were ever important, they are certainly important now in the midst of a health crisis,” said Dawn Jamison, district communications officer. “We have been humbled by the outpouring of teachers, staff and community members who have raised their hands to help.”
Romulus Community Schools has partnered with Sodexo, the district food service provider, to rally their staff to bag meals for distribution. In just the first week of the school closure, staff workers had prepared nearly 10,000 meals.
Due to the “Stay Home, Stay Safe” order, the district had to halt delivery and shift to meal pickup available weekdays at Halecreek Elementary, Wick Elementary, Barth Elementary, Romulus Elementary and Romulus High School from 10 a.m.
“Our entire Romulus community has truly come together to support our families,” said Crockett. “We are so grateful for such a spirit of unity and for the opportunity to support our students during this time of need.”
