The long-vacant Spartan warehouse and distribution center in Plymouth Township will soon become an Amazon facility.
The on-line retailer will convert the former grocery facility, located on Haggerty Road, across from the former Kmart center, into a sorting center. Amazon officials said there are plans to open five new such facilities in metro Detroit this year. The Plymouth Township center will sort and categorize smaller packages and is expected to begin operations this summer.
Plymouth Township Supervisor Kurt Heise said the Spartan warehouse, located near the Henry Ford Health development planned on the former Kmart property, has been abandoned for more than a decade. Heise said the building was constructed in the early 1970s and that Amazon will add about 30,000 square feet to the facility at a cost of $2.5 million. The new sorting center will create an anticipated 200 new jobs, although Heise said that number could increase. Heise described the selection of Plymouth Township one of the five new sites planned by Amazon as an “honor” and called the new center a “big win for Plymouth Township.”
Heise said the center is expected to be fully operational by the 2021 holiday season.
