City of Wayne Police Department honors officers

The Wayne Police Department honored several officers for exemplary performance during 2019 recently in presentations delayed by the pandemic.

The police awards committee, which includes Chief of Police Ryan Strong and several patrol and command officers, met and reviewed incidents from throughout the year in making the selection for the honors.  The members of the committee met early in 2020 to honor officers' performance in 2019, hoping to have the traditional in-person ceremony to celebrate the awards. As the pandemic prevented the usual ceremony, as it has in most area police departments, Strong recognized all the award recipients on their individual shifts during the past few weeks, according to a department spokesman.

The awards were based on a variety of incidents and performance by officers, including safely de-escalating mental health emergencies, safely arresting dangerous and armed suspects without incident, recovering stolen property, investigative work leading to the arrest of a sexual assault suspect, and many other examples of exemplary police work..

One of the highest honors in the department, the Meritorious Service Award was presented to Lt. Springer, Sgt. Amore, and Ofc. Colwell.

The Lifesaving Award was presented to Ofc. Whalen and commendations were presented to Lt. Springer, Sgt. Hughes, Sgt. Amore, Sgt. Perez, Sgt. Boruta, Ofc. Jagotka, Ofc. Talmadge, Ofc. Bolton, Ofc. Colwell, Ofc. Whalen and Ofc. Williams

The prestigious Chief's Award for 2019 went to Sgt. Perez, Sgt. Boruta, Ofc. Arndt, Ofc, Bolton, Ofc. Colwell and Ofc. Priebe.
