The City of Westland is now accepting applications to join the police department.
The department recently exhausted the eligibility list from which new officers are hired. Department officials anticipate starting a new process this month to establish the next eligibility list and as part of the process, applicants will be required to take the written portion of their testing through EMPCO (http://empco.net/).
Since testing dates could be limited due to the current health restrictions, officials are urging qualified candidates to take advantage of early registration to complete the testing in time to ensure a spot on the eligibility list. Officials urged potential candidates to meet all the requirements before paying for and taking the written test. Applicants must be a citizen of the United States, not less than 21 years of age with a high school diploma or GED. Candidates must have a valid driver's license and be a graduate of a police academy and MCOLES certified (or certifiable at time of hire). Students at a law enforcement academy at time of application will be accepted.
The Westland Police Officers Association signed a new 4-year collective bargaining agreement May 5 of 2020. This new contract included major improvements to the police officers benefits, including a top salary of $72,671, with a total compensation package of $87,093 along with a defined benefit pension plan with a multiplier of 2.25 or an option of a defined contribution plan with employer match. The department offers a top vacation accrual of 260 hours per year; 18 hours of sick time per month; 15 paid holidays; 72 hours of personal time per year and a bonus of 48 hours of vacation time per year which will be added to officer's bank if less than 48 hours of sick time are used in a calendar year.
The Westland Police Department also offers various assignments and opportunities for advancement, officials said.
