‘Malloween’ and ghost hunt set in Westland

The City of Westland Halloween Decorating Contest will continue through Nov. 1.

Residents can visit the city website to nominate themselves or a friend in one or each of the three categories: Best Autumn Display, Best Spooky Display and Most Over the Top Display. Nominees will be asked to enter a picture along with their submission.

"The Department of Neighborhood Services team will be out and about in neighborhoods in search of those residents who have showcased their creativity and helped to bring the autumn/Halloween aesthetic to the community," commented Mayor William R. Wild.

"As our Neighborhood Services team spends their days throughout our Westland neighborhoods, they will once again be the judges for the contest and will make the final decision on who wins."

Winners’ names will be announced and awarded with prizes at the council meeting on Monday, Nov. 15.

Younger ghosts, goblins, princesses and cartoon heroes can celebrate at the annual MALLoween set for 5:30 until 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 27 at the Westland Shopping Center in the JCPenney parking lot.

The free family event is for children 12 and younger and will feature entertainment and DJ provided by The Dance Academy. Malloween is sponsored this year by North Brothers Ford, Garden City Hospital, the City of Westland and the  Westland Parks and Recreation Department.

Traditional trick or treating hours in the city are not regulated but public safety officials recommend that all children, especially those younger than 12, are supervised as they go house to house and that at least one child in every group carries a flashlight.

Officials also suggest that residents prepare for the young visitors by clearing away any porch items that might trip costumed children and be sure to keep the porch well lit during the traditional evening.

Westland Historical Commis-sion members will host a Halloween Ghost Hunt at the Westland Historic Village Park  beginning with check in at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 29.

The official ghost hunt will be directed by members of the Great Lakes Ghost Hunters and begin at 7 p.m.

Tickets are priced at $40 and all proceeds from the event will be used to help fund the maintenance and operation of the Westland Historic Village Park.

Participants must be 18 or older and no drugs or alcohol will be allowed. Participants should bring a small flashlight. The event will take place at 857 North Wayne Road in Westland.
