The Romulus Police Department had joined an elite group accredited by the Michigan Law Enforcement Accreditation Commission.

The accreditation demonstrates the departmental commitment to continue improvement and its mission to protect and serve the residents of the city, noted Mayor LeRoy Burcroff. The Romulus department is one of only 38 Michigan police agencies or 7 percent in the state to win the prestigious accreditation.

Facilitated by the Michigan Association Chiefs of Police (MACP) and the Michigan Sheriffs' Association (MSA), this voluntary accreditation program requires the adoption of more than 100 rigorous professional standards and a thorough review of all policies, procedures and practices to ensure compliance. Assessments are conducted by third-party assessors and require proof that the police department meets or exceeds those standards in order to earn and keep its accreditation.

The primary goals of accreditation are: To establish and maintain the best practices of the profession; to build or maintain community trust and bolster confidence in the agency; to improve service and limit liability; to establish fair and professional personnel practices and to increase accountability to all stakeholders

“This accreditation means a lot the community,” said Burcroff. “I am proud of Chief Pfannes' leadership, as well as the hard work and commitment our police officers display every day in the field. I'm excited about our city's future knowing we are doing everything we can to ensure that residents have the opportunity live, work and play in a safe environment.”

Police Chief Robert Pfannes said the accreditation was a cooperative effort.

“We are grateful and fortunate to have Mayor Burcroff and Romulus residents supporting us during this accreditation process. We remain committed to excellence and working collaboratively with the community on safety efforts and initiatives moving forward,” Pfannes said.

Robert Stevenson of the Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police presented the accreditation in front of city officials and community members at the Oct. 4 meeting of the Romulus City Council.

“The Romulus Police Department certainly earned the accreditation. They worked hard each day to be exemplary members of law enforcement. These men and women are now part of an elite group of only 38 other police agencies in Michigan to hold this title,” Stevenson said.

The Romulus Police Department was recently awarded a $612,000 grant from the American Rescue Plan. Funding from the grant will be used to replace all police radios and hire additional officers.
