The new facility at the Interstate 275 and Ann Arbor Road interchange near Haggerty Road provides emergency, primary and specialty along with the emergency room staffed 24 hours a day, every day, hospital administrators explained.
The 120,000 square foot structure replaces the abandoned K-Mart building which stood empty at the site since the retailer closed the store in 2017 and the building was razed in 2019.
With the opening of the new facility, the former Henry Ford clinic on Haggerty Road was closed and services moved into the new building earlier this month. Pediatrics services were transferred to the Beck Road Henry Ford facility.Plymouth Township Supervisor Kurt Heise welcomed the opening of the new facility calling it an incredible use of the former big-box store site. He noted that abandoned big box buildings are an issue for municipalities across the country as retail shopping habits change.
"The Henry Ford Hospital project is one of the crown jewels of western Wayne County," Heise said. "It is a terrific addition to the Plymouth community and provides world class health care to our residents while at the same time is an incredible redevelopment of the old Kmart property." He added that the new facility "is a tremendous benefit to the long-term economic development prospects for the Plymouth community."
According to Denise Brooks-Williams, CEO of Henry Ford Health North Market, research demonstrated that the new medical center was needed in the area. She said the new facility now provides complete medical care and multiple treatment options for patients. Specialty services offered include cardiology, dermatology, gastroenterology, neurology, orthopedics and a pain clinic, along with the emergency care department, she said.
The new facility also has an on-site, full-service laboratory and a retail pharmacy and will offer mammograms and other radiology services, administrators noted.
Brooks Williams said a new surgery center will be available soon and that the facility is already offering some outpatient surgical procedures that formerly required hospitalization for patients.
