Park project includes survey of Norwayne residents

Residents of the Norwayne community are being asked their opinions about improvements to Venoy-Dorsey Park.

The Friends of the Rouge group, in partnership with the Norwayne Community Citizens Council, the City of Westland, and the National Kidney Foundation of Michigan secured a grant to solicit community input and engagement in the planning process for the park. The effort is part of a Wayne County effort to fill gaps and build new greenway trails and water access infrastructure between parks and the Rouge River. Currently, plans include the installation of two universally accessible kayak launches on the lower Rouge River in the park.

Members of the river protection group are seeking residents' input about additional improvements in Venoy-Dorsey Park and are soliciting suggestions for enhancements of programming, accessibility, or sustainability of park improvements, planned to be complete in 2024.

The survey, available online, asks Norwayne area residents to rank their preferences among proposed improvements including: a new paved trail linking Venoy and Merriman Road park trailheads; a large universally accessible playground inside the park; new soccer fields; a habitat / wetland restoration; an unpaved trail connecting Jefferson Barnes Community Center to Venoy Dorsey Park trails; a boardwalk/river overlook and universally accessible kayak launches. Residents will be asked to rate their top two priorities.

In addition, the survey asks community members for attractions that would make them more inclined to use the park  including suggestions for programming at the facility.
