Scarecrow entries are sought

Romulus residents have only until Oct. 3 to complete their entries into the downtown Romulus Scarecrow Contest.

The popular event, which began in the community in 2015, draws more entries each year, organizers said. Entries can be submitted by residents, organizations, businesses, clubs, civic groups and just about anyone interested in brightening up downtown and welcoming fall to the city. The scarecrows will be placed in the downtown Romulus corridor from Oct. 3 through Nov. 4.

Participants must pre-register for entry as space for scarecrows is limited. Registration is available in person at Romulus City Hall during regular business hours or submitted via email to Community Services. There is no fee for entering the contest.

All scarecrows must be designed so they will stand upright and entries must include any materials necessary to display the scarecrow in an upright manner. Commercially made scarecrows are not eligible for entry. Frames for scarecrow entries, measuring 6-feet by 3-feet are available for a $5 fee from the Community Development office at Romulus City Hall. The frames are in limited supply and will be sold on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Organizers said scarecrow entries must be in good taste and appropriate for viewing by the public and families. No adult, political or religious themed entries will be accepted and frightening, scary, violent, gruesome, or bloody entries are also prohibited.
