Inkster celebrates renovation of former ‘eyesore’

Inkster city officials last week helped celebrate the opening of a new apartment complex at the site of a former structure deemed an eyesore and condemned by building inspectors.

One and two bedroom apartments will be available for lease soon at the new complex at 25911 Michigan Ave. the former site of the Rode-Way Motel, which was condemned by the city several years ago. Officials said the motel had become an eyesore in the community and was a known drug and prostitution location.

The new apartment complex, developed by AAHM Investments, led by Majed and Jennifer Mehdi, features 32 units and is a mix of studio, one and two bedroom apartments. The structure was demolished to the lumber studs of the building and new plumbing, electrical, heating, cooling, drywall, flooring, paint and high-end finishes installed. Construction has been under way since the Mehdi's purchased the site in 2021, officials said.

“I want this building to look like it could be located in Birmingham,” Majed Mehdi said.

''This project is going to be a great entry point to welcome people to a new and improved apartments on Michigan Avenue. The city of Inkster is in a transformational period. My administration is committed to eliminate roadblocks and encourage entrepreneurship. This project will increase opportunities and developers will start to look at the city of Inkster differently,” said Mayor Patrick Wimberly.

Construction is nearly complete, and units will be available for lease this spring, according to a prepared statement from city officials.

“The administration is working diligently to educate our business owners of city ordinances and encourages compliance. However, we will no longer tolerate a lack of deference to the law. We want to see more properties that resemble this project in Inkster,” said Mayoral Executive Assistant Saif Alsenad.
