Relocation site for veterans memorial is discussed

Reinstalling the Romulus Veteran's Memorial at the
grounds of the historic Peter Bird House in the city
is being considered by officials.
Members of the Romulus City Council have listened to varying opinions regarding the relocation of the city veteran's monument during the past months.

During construction of the new courthouse on the municipal complex, the memorial was removed and much of it placed in storage by workers from the DPW, according to reports at various council meetings when the location of the monument was questioned by the public and council members.

A study session, allowing the public to comment on the two proposed locations, was scheduled Monday, although any decision was not available at press time.

The two proposed locations for re-installation of the monument are the southwest corner of the Romulus Municipal Complex parking lot or the formation of a veteran's memorial park at the corner of Wayne and Vining Road.

The proposed establishment of a veteran's park is at the site of the historic Peter C. Bird home, a registered national historic site. Peter C. Bird served in the Union Army during the Civil War where he was wounded during the battle of Gettysburg. After being rescued from the battlefield by his brother, Bird served for 10 years as a lighthouse keeper on the Keweenaw peninsula. When he retired, he moved to Romulus and constructed his family home now located at 12112 Wayne Road.

The famous painting "Gettysburg Cyclorama" by Paul Philippoteaux, on exhibit at the Gettysburg National Museum, features the rescue of Pvt. Bird by his brother.
