An armed man shot by a Wayne police officer on the Ford Wayne Stamping Plant property last Saturday night has died, according to a police report.
Six officers from the Wayne Police Department responded to a 7 p.m. 911 call April 1 reporting a man outside the Van Born Road employee entrance to the plant. Officers located the man and ordered him to show his hands. In response, according to the report, the man brandished a handgun. The man pointed the weapon at the officers despite their continued verbal orders to drop the gun, the report stated.
One officer fired his weapon one time, striking the man who was immediately transported to a local hospital by City of Wayne fire rescue services. He has been identified as Zachary Scott Polk, 53, formerly of Michigan but residing in Ohio. Police reported Polk’s death in a statement issued Monday.Polk was not authorized to be on Ford Motor Co. property, according to the report. A preliminary investigation indicates that Polk was suffering a mental health emergency, police said.
According to the press release, officers from the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office were also on the scene. The incident is under investigation by Michigan State Police which is protocol for any police officer involved shooting..
