Village Arts Factory offering special sensory program

Art is an intersection of many human needs and The Village Arts Factory in Canton Township is now welcoming visitors at every level of sensory response.

The facility is now certified by KultureCity®, a leading non-profit organization committed to creating more inclusive experiences for those with sensory needs. The new initiative will provide an accommodating environment for all participants, enabling guests with sensory issues to have a positive experience when taking part in a Village Arts Factory program or event, officials explained.

“The Village Arts Factory is committed to ensuring that all of our programs and events are inclusive and welcoming to all individuals who are interested in participating,” said Kevin Ryan, community program director. “By providing all of these sensory inclusive resources to our guests, we hope that more individuals will take part in our events and activities and not avoid them due to loud noises and possibly over-stimulating environments.”

Sensory sensitivities or challenges with sensory regulation are often experienced by individuals with autism, dementia, PTSD, and other similar conditions. One of the major barriers for these individuals is sensitivity to overstimulation and noise, which is an enormous part of the environment in a high-traffic area.  With this new certification, the Village Arts Factory is now better prepared to assist guests with sensory sensitivities in having the most comfortable and accommodating experience possible, officials said.

The certification process ensures that Village Arts Factory staff members are trained annually by leading medical professionals on how to recognize guests with sensory needs and how to handle a sensory overload situation.

KultureCity® Sensory Bags, equipped with noise-canceling headphones provided by Puro Sound Labs, fidget tools, verbal cue cards, and KCVIP lanyards, will be available to all guests at the Village Arts Factory who may feel overwhelmed by a new environment. In addition, facility signs will indicate noisier spaces as “Headphone Zones.”  Staff members will also be able to direct guests to quieter or less stimulating areas in facilities or at events, Ryan said. Prior to attending an event, families can download the free KultureCity® App where one can view what sensory features are available and where they can be accessed. The App also includes the Social Story, which will provide a preview of what to expect while enjoying a Village Arts Factory event.

“Our communities shape our lives and to know that the Village Arts Factory is willing to go the extra mile to ensure that everyone, no matter their ability, is included in community experiences is amazing,” said Uma Srivastava, KultureCity® executive director.  “We're honored to partner with the Village Arts Factory to provide a truly inclusive experience for all guests!”

KultureCity® is a leading non-profit recognized nationwide for using  resources to revolutionize and effect change in the community for those with sensory needs, not just those with autism. Since the program began, KultureCity® has created more than 1,000 Sensory InclusiveTM public and private services, organizations, events, and venues in six countries: this includes special events such as the NFL Pro-Bowl, NFL Super Bowl, MLB World Series, and MLB All-Star Weekend, according to a prepared release.
