Volunteer group book sale helps fund programs at Romulus library
The Romulus Public Library helped celebrate Juneteenth this year with a special booth during the city-wide event. |
In addition to the books and other materials on sale, group members opted to sweeten up the event with the sale of cookies and quick breads at a bake sale. Book Chairman Kathy Dick said they hope to add more sweets to the next book sale, depending on the sales this year. The Friends are also hosting a small flea market during the book sale, with some exceptional bargains on gently used items.
Members of the Friends group are local residents who support the goals and services at the library. While the librarians develop the programs and plan the special activities, the friends provide funding generated through fundraising events throughout the year. A bowling night (See page 6.) is planned this weekend and a magic show for children is also set for this month, Dick said.
The Friends provide funding for library programs designed for children, tweens, teens and adults and the group supports both the summer and winter reading programs. In addition, Friends are strong advocates of the library and volunteers from the group will be on hand during the upcoming Romulus Pumpkin Festival, promoting the library and the programs offered there.
The upcoming Book and Bake Sale is set during regular library hours; 9:30 a.m. until 8 p.m. Thursday, July 27; 9:30 until 6 p.m. Friday July 28 and 9:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. Saturday, July 29.
The Friends of the Library are also welcoming new members to the group. Dick said while there are about 40 members, there are only about 12 or 15 who regularly attend the monthly meetings and help plan events. Membership applications are available at the library and on the library website, Dick said. Annual membership is $15 for an individual and $25 for a family. The contribution is tax deductible and receipts are available, according to the website.
The library is located at 11121 Wayne Road in the city. For more information, call (734) 942-7589.
