Wreaths Across America seeking donors, volunteers

Each year, millions of Americans come together to remember the fallen, honor those who serve and their families, and teach the next generation about the value of freedom.

The City of Romulus will once again participate in the annual Wreaths Across America recognition of veterans which takes place throughout the country.

The ceremony this year is planned for noon on Saturday, Dec. 16 at the Romulus Memorial Cemetery.

The national event is a gathering of volunteers and patriots in local, state and national cemeteries in all 50 states - most recently at 3,702 participating locations - as part of National Wreaths Across America Day.

Each year, a new theme is chosen to help volunteers and supporters focus their messaging and outreach in their own communities.

The national nonprofit theme for 2023 is “Serve and Succeed.”

More than two million volunteers and supporters will gather at more than 4,000 participating locations in all 50 states, at sea and abroad, according to the organization website.

Local residents are being asked to help support the PVT James D Donovan/ Romulus VFW Post 78 as members attempt to honor every veteran interred in city cemetery.

VFW members are asking residents and businesses to sponsor a wreath to honor a veteran during the special ceremony.

Residents, businesses. clubs and family members each year purchase a a veteran's wreath in honor of or in memory of a loved one who served in the armed forces. Donors can allow the local organization to designate a recipient among those interred at the Romulus cemetery.

Wreaths can be purchased online until Nov. 28 by visiting: https://www.wreathsacrossamerica.org/ Choose “Local Sponsorship Group” and search “Romulus VFW” or MI0129P.

Volunteers to help place the wreaths are still needed, the a VFW spokesman said.

Donations can be made in person at Romulus Mayor Robert McCraight's office at City Hall, 11111 Wayne Road.

In 2022, more than 2.7 million veterans' wreaths were placed by volunteers on headstones at 3,702 participating locations around the country in honor of the service and sacrifices made by veterans with each name said out loud.

The Dec. 16 event in Romulus will be free and open to the public.
