Northville Township Fire Chief Brent Siegel honored Heather Brown with a Civilian Life Saving Award at the regular meeting of the board of trustees last month.
Brown was honored for her life-saving actions while participating in a race recently at Maybury State Park when she witnessed another runner collapse in front of her. Brown, an oncology nurse with Michigan Medicine, determined the man was in cardiac arrest and while another runner dialed 911, began CPR.
Northville Township Police arrived on the scene and officers defibrillated the patient using the AED in the patrol vehicle. When township paramedics arrived on the scene, they continued patient care while transporting him to Ascension Providence Park in Novi.Siegel called the patient's family the following day to determine his condition and eight days later the patient, Daniel Prather, personally returned the chief's call.
Siegal commented that community heroes, in collaboration with the Northville Township Public Safety team, are the reason Northville Township has a cardiac arrest survival rate that is three times the rest of the state and country.
Siegel presented Brown with the award commenting that she had saved a complete stranger's life and without her immediate action, the outcome for the patient might have been substantially different.
