McConnell named as Chief Judge at 18th District Court

Judge Mark A. McConnell has been appointed Chief Judge of the 18th District Court in Westland for a two-year term. The announcement of McConnell's promotion came from the Michigan Supreme Court offices.

McConnell was first elected to the bench in 2008, and reelected in 2014 and 2020.  Prior to his election to the court, he was an associate attorney with Angelo A. Plakas and Associates, P.C., from 1995.  He was a research attorney with the Michigan Court of Appeals for two years after graduating with honors from the University of Detroit School of Law in 1993.  He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science from Bowling Green State University.

The 18th District Court adjudicates civil cases with amounts in controversy less than $25,000, landlord tenant cases, misdemeanor criminal cases from arraignment to sentencing and felony criminal cases from arraignment to preliminary examination.  Along with Judge Sandra Ference Cicirelli, the 18th District Court handled more than 35,000 cases in 2021.
