Motorists in the Westland area have been detoured around two bridge structures as Wayne County makes improvements to the Merriman Road bridges in both Westland and Garden City.
Wayne County road crews plan to replace the bridges at Merriman Road over the Middle Rouge River and Merriman Road over Hines Drive, along with installation of new guardrails, pavement resurfacing, storm sewer installation, sidewalks, pavement markings, and traffic signal modernization on Merriman Road from south of Warren Road to Hawthorne Drive.
In a prepared notice from the county, officials said the work was scheduled to begin Jan. 9 when Merriman Road between Warren Road and Hawthorne Drive was scheduled to be closed through this fall. No exact completion date was available as officials said unforeseen delays or inclement weather could affect the completion date
Merriman Road from Warren Road to Hawthorne Drive will be closed for the duration of the bridge work portion of the project, which is expected to be completed sometime this fall. Detours will be posted in the project vicinity for both closures. Local traffic will have access on their respective side of the bridges, according to a county spokesman. Posted detours will be: northbound Merriman Road traffic will be detoured east on Warren Road, north on Middlebelt Road, west on Joy Road while southbound Merriman Road traffic will be detoured east on Joy Road, south on Middlebelt Road, west on Warren Road. Eastbound Hines Drive traffic will be detoured east on Hawthorne Drive, north on Merriman Road, east on Joy Road, south on Inkster Road.
In addition, westbound Hines Drive traffic will be detoured north on Inkster Road, west on Joy Road, south on Merriman Road, west on Hawthorne Drive.
Reduced speeds and load restrictions may be posted. Flaggers will be present as needed during the project, and county officials urged drivers to use caution when traveling through work zones.
Access will be maintained to all residents and businesses for the duration for the project.
