A 29-year-old man has been arrested and charged with the fatal shooting of a Dearborn woman and serious injury of a Romulus man that occurred in Westland during the early morning hours of June 1.
The suspect, Amir Patterson, 29, of Taylor, was scheduled for a court appearance in 18th District Court today, following his arraignment last week on charges of first-degree murder, assault with intent to murder, first-degree home invasion and three felony firearm violations.
According to police reports, officers responded to a call at about 2 a.m. June 1 reporting a shooting. When officers arrived on the scene, they found a 32-year-old Romulus man who had suffered a gunshot wound. Subsequent investigation by officers revealed the shooting took place in the 37000 block of Scottsdale Circle. When officers arrived at that location they discovered a 36-year-old Dearborn Heights woman who had also suffered a gunshot wound.
Officers provided first aid and Westland EMTs subsequently transported both the injured victims to a local hospital for emergency treatment. The Romulus man was reported in stable condition but the Dearborn Heights woman, identified as Bushra Mawry, the founder of Hand in Hand, a nonprofit established to aid the humanitarian crisis in Yemen. Mawry, a nurse, founded the organization in 2020. The Romulus man remained in stable condition last week.
Patterson is incarcerated at the Wayne County Jail following his arraignment before Judge Mark McConnell at the 18th District Court where bond was denied.
Police said the preliminary investigation indicated the shooting was not a random incident. Court records indicate that Patterson was on parole following serving prison time for manslaughter when the shooting occurred.
