Veteran police officer to retire

Ofc. Joseph Voet
A 21-year veteran of the Canton Township Police Department has retired.

Retiring Ofc. Joseph Voet, who served seven years as a police officer in Ishpeming prior to beginning his 21-year career with Canton in 2002 will be missed, noted Police Chief Chad Baugh.

“During my career in Canton, I have met some of the finest people in law enforcement, but Officer Voet stands out as a true ambassador for those who wear the uniform,” said Baugh. “He was compassionate with those he served, always looking for a commonsensical solution to issues, undoubtedly learned during his time spent in the Upper Peninsula. Joe has a heart of gold and will truly be missed; I wish him all the best in his retirement.”

As a road patrol officer, Voet responded to calls for service, provided traffic enforcement, conducted investigations and participated in the department community policing practices.

In addition to his patrol duties,  Voet participated in many special units including Evidence Technician, Field Training Officer, Detective Bureau, Explorer Advisor, Special Enforcement Unit, Awards Committee, Department Recruiter and Community Engagement Team. While he served on all special units with demonstrated skills and professionalism, Voet made his mark in the department with his innate ability and passion for those units that connected him to the community, officials said. His participation in the department community engagement activities was second to none, they added.

Voet's department file is filled with letters from individuals he served in various capacities, all complementing him for displaying the utmost courtesy and respect during their time of crisis. One writer best summarized his demeanor with the statement: “His kindness cannot be taught in a procedural manual.”

“Voet was dedicated to serving the Canton community with knowledge, pride and a positive attitude. He provided a unique approach and perspective to policing that will be missed by his co-workers and the public at large,” Baugh said.
