Halloween activities planned for all ages

As the calendar inches closer to Halloween, Canton Leisure Services has organized several events to help celebrate the 'spooky season'.

This Saturday from 10 a.m. until noon Oct. 7, the Village Theater at Cherry Hill will host an informative free “Scream-tastic Halloween Special Effects Workshop” led by special effects professional Dave Hettmer, whose work has appeared in classic movies including, “Army of Darkness.” During this workshop for ages 14 and older,, participants will learn how to take their Halloween display, costumes, or theater productions to the next level, organizers said. Participants will discover the trade secrets to creating amazing authentic-looking props and masks. Participants will also see various props, as well as videos and photos of previous builds created by the instructor and discuss the different techniques and materials used to create them.  Pre-registration is required at www.cantonfun.org/register.  For more information or to register call (734) 394-5374. 

Also on Saturday, the PJ's and Pumpkins Indoor Movie featuring the film “Hotel Transylvania: Transformania” (Rated PG) will be shown at the Summit on the Park, located at 46000 Summit Parkway.  Doors will  open at 7 p.m. and the movie will start at 7:30 p.m. Fees are $3 for Canton residents and $4 for non-residents. Audiences are encouraged to bring a blanket or lawn chairs and get comfy in the gym during the film. There will also be a “Kids' PJ Fashion Show” as part of the fun. Movie snacks will also be available for purchase onsite.  Pre-registration is available at www.cantonfun.org/register. Cash only will be accepted at the event.  

The 21 and older crowd is invited to attend a special Monster Mash Halloween Party from 7:30 until 10:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 13, at The Village Theater at Cherry Hill, located at 50400 Cherry Hill Road.  This adult Halloween Party will feature a costume contest, games, cash bar, all to the live soundtrack of Atomic Radio performing top 40 and Halloween hits. From 3 until 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 14, children ages 7 - 12 can take part in some spooktacular Halloween fun at the Canton Boo Bash.  This safe and supervised Halloween party will feature a costume contest, pizza dinner, and spooky fun in the Summit on the Park Banquet Center, located at 46000 Summit Parkway. Per person fees are $20 for Canton residents and $26 for non-residents. Pre-registration is required.  Sign up at www.cantonfun.org/register. Parents are not required to stay for the duration of the event. 

Canton's Trick or Treat Story Trail returns on Saturday, Oct. 21. Costumed visitors can join Canton Leisure Services and Canton Public Safety in Heritage Park for trick or treating along the story trail in select timeslots from 1-3 p.m. The feature story is appropriate for all ages, organizers said. Pre-registration is required for every trick-or-treater, regardless of age.  Per-person fees are $10 for Canton residents and $13 for non-residents. The Village Arts Factory, in partnership with Canton Leisure Services staff, have organized the Kids' Halloween Stroll at the Village Arts Factory from 4 until 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, with games, music, treats, decorations, and costumes. Trick or treaters can travel from studio to studio as they stroll among fun interactive stations located throughout the warehouse building, located at 50755 Cherry Hill Road. This event is geared toward younger trick-or-treaters ages 12 and younger and will feature non-scary festive seasonal music and decorations. In addition, a sensory-friendly timeslot is planned from 4-5 p.m. All participants are encouraged to wear costumes.  Pre-registration is required. Tickets are $5 and are available online only at www.cantonfun.org/register.
