First responders honored

Annual Rotary Club program celebrates public service

The Plymouth Rotary Club celebrated the vital contributions of first responders during the annual presentation last Friday at the Plymouth Community Center.

Honored this year as the Paramedic of the Year was Huron Valley Ambulance Senior Paramedic Aaron Grant. Karl Rock of Huron Valley Ambulance presented the honor to Grant during the event which has been an annual Rotary Club tradition in the city for more than two decades.

City of Plymouth Police Chief Al Cox presented the Officer of the Year award to Ofc. James Baber while City of Plymouth Fire Chief Michael Samhat announced Firefighter/EMT Alan Prieur as the honoree this year.

Plymouth Township Fire Chief Dan Phillips presented Andrew (Drew) Loudon with the Firefighter of the Year Award, although Loudon was forced to miss the ceremony. In a surprise presentation, Plymouth Township Assistant Police Chief Jon Brothers presented the top law enforcement award for the year to Police Chief Tom Tiderington. 

Last month, during a separate event, the Plymouth Police Department presented awards and commendations during a ceremony to recognize the performance of officers.

Department commendations, awarded in recognition of outstanding performance of a difficult task involving personal risk to the employee's safety when, because of the employee's actions, a serious crime is prevented or the perpetrator is apprehended, went to Sgt. Justin Bulmer and Ofc. James Baber.

Life Saving awards, presented to an officer for the saving of a human life were awarded to Sgt. Josh Carroll, Sgt. Chris Lahtinen, Ofc. Jeff Jones and Ofc. Jon Hiemstra.

A Certificate of Merit for outstanding performance of duty under unusual or difficult conditions was awarded to Sgt. Justin Bulmer, Sgt. David Edwards, Ofc. Mark Farhat, Ofc. Jay Miller, Ofc. James Baber and Ofc. David Cowell.

Police Officer of the Year for 2019 was Ofc. Jeff Jones and for 2020 Ofc. Jay Miller. Both those annual awards for outstanding performance were delayed due to the COVID pandemic.

Individual commendations were presented to department members who performed efficient and valuable service to the department either in carrying out a specific task or in the outstanding performance of general duties over an extended period of time. Sgt. Justin Bulmer, Ofc. Tony Angelosanto, Ofc. Mark Farhat, Ofc. Jeff Jones and Ofc. James Baber each were presented with commendations.  

Unit Commendations were presented to department members who performed efficient and valuable service to the department either in carrying out a specific task or in the outstanding performance of general duties over an extended period of time. Sgt. Justin Bulmer, Sgt. Chris Lahtinen, Ofc. Matt Stoops, Ofc. Jeff Jones, Ofc. Mark Farhat and Ofc. James Baber were awarded commendations. 

Continued Service Decoration awards, presented to employees who have accrued a minimum of 10 years of continued service with the Plymouth Police Department went to Sgt. Josh Carroll- 15 years of service.

A certificate of appreciation was presented to Records Supervisor Renee Revels and to  Administrative Assistant to the Chief of Police Jennifer Dergis.

A Safe Driving Award, presented to department members whose driving practices have exhibited sufficient ability to avoid chargeable accidents went to Ofc. Tony Angelosanto, a 15-year-award and Ofc. Jeff Jones, a 10-year award and Sgt. Chris Lahtinen, a 5-year award.
