Teen arrested, charged in bathroom sex assault

A 15-year-old boy will face kidnapping and assault with intent to commit sexual penetration charges in an attack on a woman in a public restroom in downtown Plymouth.

The attack took place during the evening of Oct. 30, according to police. Video surveillance cameras recorded the teen entering the Comfort Station on Penniman Avenue, adjacent to The Gathering at about 6:34 p.m.  At about 7 p.m., according to prosecutor's reports, a 29-year-old woman is seen entering the public restroom.

According to a report from the office of Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy, as the woman attempted to leave one of the stalls, the teen pushed her back into the stall, locked the door and attempted to sexually assault her.

She fought back, she told police, and her assailant fled the facility. She immediately reported the incident to Plymouth police who arrested the teen following an investigation, including the surveillance tapes.

The teen, whose name has not been released due to his age, has been charged as a juvenile but is adult designated by the prosecution. The adult designation allows the judge in the case the option of sentencing him as either an adult or juvenile or impose an adult sentence if he is not rehabilitated, according to prosecutors.
