There are 30 Canton Township youngsters walking on air this holiday season.

The young people, participants in the B.L.O.C. K. Youth and Teen Center Youth Connection program, each received an electric hoverboard to lift their holiday spirits. The hoverboards were donated by Maraschinos Pub in Canton along with a pizza dinner for the entire group.

Maraschinos is a year-long supporter of Canton Leisure Services programs including Hot Meal Mondays, the after school program at the B.L.O.C.K. and several other activities. Each participant in the youth connection program took home one of the hoverboards, officials noted.

“Thanks to the generosity of Maraschinos Pub in Canton, every student in the Canton Youth Connection program received an electric hoverboard as a way to both celebrate and brighten the holiday season,” stated Laura Mortier, recreation supervisor.

“This year has been challenging to all of us as COVID continues to dominate our lives, especially this time of year as programs that would normally benefit from support from local businesses are not receiving the contributions, but Maraschinos Pub has been able to once again make these generous donations that truly thrill each and every one of these program participants.”

The Canton Youth Connection is a free afterschool program for qualifying children ages 5-15 within the Canton community that is presented by The B.L.O.C.K. Youth and Teen Center. Throughout the year CYC participants meet weekly at Miller Elementary School to address themes and goals through activities, crafts, and guest speakers from the Canton community. Speakers and mentors stress and explain the value of achievement and showcase neighborhood resources along with stressing the importance of lifelong fitness, increasing knowledge of nutrition and healthy lifestyles, creating positive attitudes about the future, learning how to work with others and the ability to work out conflicts, Mortier said.

The B.L.O.C.K. Youth and Teen Center, located on the third floor of the Canton Administration Building at 1150 S. Canton Center Road provides a teen-friendly environment where students from ages 11-17 can participant in supervised afterschool programs, social events, and activities.
