Van Buren school board members elect officers

Members of the Van Buren Public Schools Board of Education unanimously selected Amy Pearce to serve as the president of the group during their regular meeting earlier this month.
Voters chose Pearce to serve in her first elected office on the board about a year ago.
She was nominated for the leadership position by former board president Keith Johnston who declined to seek reelection to the post saying it was time for new leadership.

Susan Featheringill will again serve as vice president, Darlene Loyer Gerick will serve another term as secretary and Simone Pinter will return to the position of secretary of the board. In addition, the board members accepted reappointments to committees on which they served last year including Pinter, Johnston and Gerick on the facilities committee; Featheringill, Pinter and Pearce to the finance committee; Johnston, Kelly Owen and Pinter to the health advisory committee; Featheringill, Pearce and Calvin Hawkins to the policy committee and Gerick, Owen and Hawkins to the school improvement committee.
In celebration of January as School Board Member Recognition Month, there were refreshments at the meeting and the board members were presented with certificates of appreciation from the Michigan Association of School Boards  along with bags of gifts from the local school district.
The certificates and gifts were presented to the board members by Superintendent of Schools Pete Kudlak who thanked them for their service to the district.
