Wayne seeking donations for city Veterans’ Memorial

Donations to the Wayne Veterans Memorial project in Wayne are still being accepted.
The memorial will specifically honor veterans and will be installed on the south side of Wayne City Hall as part of the UAW Local 845 relocation to the city.
While $26,000 in donations was collected by the city last year for repairs to the Peace Memorial located in the Michigan Avenue median near the city library, donors sought a project specific to honoring veterans who served in the military. When the UAW opted to relocate to the Wayne Road building, union officials sought a location to relocate the veterans memorial currently at their Canton Township union offices.

Wayne officials offered the site near city hall for the Wayne Veterans Memorial and began a fundraising drive to pay for the moving and installation of the structure. They need another $50,000 to completely fund the project, according to a statement from city offices and hope to break ground on the construction this spring. The funds will be used for preparing the groundwork, pouring concrete, relocating and installing the existing monument along with a flagpole and benches.
The memorial will be "a lasting tribute for the many veterans who served their country," according to literature distributed by the city.
"Many of these brave souls died, were declared missing in action, or taken prisoner of war. It is incumbent on all to honor our veterans, both past and present, as we would not be enjoying the freedom we have today without their sacrifice," the statement continued.
Donations are being accepted at Wayne City Hall, 3355 South Wayne Road in Wayne, 48184. Checks can be made payable to City of Wayne with Veterans Memorial in the memo line and mailed to the address above, Attention: Director of Community Development Lori Gouin.
