Members of the Sumpter Township Board of Trustees in attendance at the May 5 meeting unanimously approved ballot language for a renewal of the current 1-mill tax to support the fire department.
Trustee Don LaPorte was excused from the meeting and Treasurer Ken Bednark was not in attendance at the meeting. There was little discussion regarding the placing of the question on the Aug. 4 primary election ballot.
The 1-mill tax is a renewal of the existing millage which will expire this year. The new millage will be at the same rate and continue for four years, expiring in 2023. The 1-mill tax will generate $1 for every $1,000 of assessed taxable value of property and homes, usually about half the market value.
The millage is expected to generate about $365,500 during the first year and will be used exclusively, officials said, for fire department protection, operations and maintenance of the Sumpter Township Fire Department.
