Michigan State Police reported finding four handguns, ammunition and a suppressor during a traffic stop in Canton Township earlier this month.
Michigan State Troopers executed a traffic stop along southbound Interstate-275 in Canton Wednesday morning, May 6.
The stop was part of an increased traffic patrol in the area where excessive speed has been seen in the Metro North Post of the Michigan State Police during the pandemic, police said. The Metro South Post is also addressing the issue in Wayne County where speeding motorists have also been a problem.
In this instance, the vehicle also had a boat on a trailer in tow. The driver and other passengers in the vehicle told troopers they were on their way to an area in Monroe for a fishing outing. The driver also told troopers than there was a handgun in the vehicle and admitted that he did not have a permit or concealed license for the pistol. Troopers subsequently searched the car and found four handguns, ammunition and the suppressor.
The driver was arrested by the troopers at the scene and remained in police custody while the office of the Wayne County Prosecutor determined the charges to be filed.
“We also know that when we conduct traffic enforcement we also stop other crimes,” noted a statement from the Michigan State Police.
The suspect's name was not released as no charges had been filed at presstime.
