Voters to choose Van Buren school board trustees

Voters in the City of Belleville and Sumpter and Van Buren townships will chose four members of the school board during the Nov. 3 election.

Five Van Buren Township residents are seeking the four open seats on the Van Buren Public Schools Board of Education.

Voters will chose from incumbents Susan K. Featheringill, Kelly Owen and Simone Pinter who are being challenged by Nicole Falconer and Terrance C. Goff.

Incumbent Susan K. Featheringill, 63, is a retired assistant superintendent for business operations at the Taylor School District. 

She earned her Master of Arts degree in educational leadership at Eastern Michigan University and has a bachelor of business administration degree in accounting from Cleary College of Business.

She is a past member of Michigan Schools Energy Cooperative, elected to the board for 2001-2005; vice president, 2005-2006; and president, 2006-2007 and also served on the board of Wayne County School Business Officials, as secretary 1996-97; treasurer, 1997-98; vice president, 1998-99; and president, 1999-2000. She is currently an emeritus member.

She also has been a member of the Michigan Association of School Boards since January 2017.

Her civil involvement includes Girls Scouts of America Council, Southeastern Michigan Finance Committee, Women's Study Club, Staff Parish Committee, Sunday School Teacher, Junior Girl Scout Leader, Children's Choir Director, Church Finance Committee, Joyful Noise music ministry from 2015 to present, and Church Administrative Council chairperson from January 2017 to August 2018.

Featheringill has lived in the school district for 47 years. She and her husband are the parents of two adult children.


Incumbent Kelly Owen, 57, has an associate's degree and is a homemaker.

A resident of the district for 28 years, she has served on the Van Buren Public Schools Board of Education for eight years. She was previously a member of the Van Buren Public Schools Education Foundation where she served for eight years and was active with the Parent Teacher Organizations while her children were in school, serving on various volunteer committees for events. 42607 Maude Ct., Van Buren Township, is running for reelection to the school board.

She and her husband have been married for 26 years and are the parents of three adult children.  


Incumbent Simone Pinter, 58, has been a resident of the school district for 39 years.

She is a retired florist and attended both high school and trade school. She is active with Relay for Life and the Moose Lodge.

She and her husband are the parents of three children. 


Dionne Falconer, 47, has lived in the district for eight years. 

She is a Regulation Agent with the Michigan State Unemployment Office and earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration at Ferris State University and a Master of Arts degree in Business Administration/Ebusiness from the University of Phoenix..

She is active with the Tyler Elementary School Parent Teacher Organization and is vice president of AGAPE Uniting Families for Christ couples' ministry.

She and her husband are the parents of three children.

She was also on the school board ballot in 2018.


Terrance C. Goff, 48, has lived in the school district for three years. He is employed as a building inspector and earned his high school degree. This is his first run for public office.

Goff served an appointed position for a three-year term on a Farmington Hills charter school.

He was also a parent coordinator for the Detroit Youth Choir prior to seeking election to the Van Buren Public Schools Board of Education.

He and his wife are the parents of three daughters.
