A 14-year-old Inkster resident is facing criminal charges following an on-line threat against John Glenn High School last week.
According to police reports, administrators at the school district learned of the social media threat Sunday, Nov. 20. In response to the situation, the high school was closed to students Monday, Nov. 21 and transitioned to virtual learning on Tuesday, Nov. 22 while the police investigation was under way.
Officials from the Wayne-Westland Community Schools district and Westland police investigators began a cooperative investigation into the posted threat. Michigan State Police and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) officers also provided assistance in the investigation, police said.
Investigators located and arrested the 14-year-old suspect who was a ninth-grade student at John Glenn High School. The 14-year-old was in custody at the Wayne County Juvenile Detention Center awaiting arraignment this week on criminal charges, police said.
“In nearly every situation, parents are responding the same way saying that they could never imagine their child making a threat like this. This is yet another example of how important it is for parents to be aware of their children's social media activity and the serious ramifications that will result,” noted Westland Police Chief Jeff Jedrusik.
“The safety and security of the students and their staff are top priorities and we want to ensure a safe and supportive learning environment for all of the students. Law enforcement and Wayne-Westland Community Schools will continue to work together and quickly identify those responsible for all school threats and will pursue prosecuting to the fullest extent of the law,” stated a prepared release from the school district offices.
