Best friends…

Donations, adoptions continue to operate Romulus Animal Shelter

Employees from the Van Buren FedEx office present donations
of animal food and supplies to the Romulus Animal Shelter
on Wayne Road. Shelter officials were grateful,
they said, for the much-needed supplies.
Romulus City Councilman William Wadsworth urged support for some “best friends” during the regular meeting of the council earlier this month.

Wadsworth reminded the audience and those viewing the meeting remotely that Christmas was a time when many people thought about a new pet as a gift or addition to the family.

“Think about the Romulus Animal Shelter,” he said. “If you are thinking of a dog or cat, go the Romulus shelter to look first. If you adopt a pet, have it neutered, you will get money back,” he said.

Students from the Summit Academy are all smiles
as they hand over new and used blankets to
Romulus Animal Shelter employees along with
a check for funds generated from the sale of
a newsletter the students designed and sold.
He also urged people to consider contributions to the shelter, where he has was instrumental in fundraising for construction of the new building and continues to raise funds for operational expenses including food and medical care for the animals. He mentioned that financial contributions to the facility have decreased as the annual fundraisers have not taken place and urged people to consider donating. He added that there were several good causes in the community to which residents could donate such as the Helping Hand facility and St. John's Lodge, all of which do a great deal of good work in the community.

“It's Christmas and a good time to donate,” Wadsworth urged.

In agreement with Wadsworth's suggestions, a large contribution of much needed animal food and supplies from the Romulus FedEx Van Buren office was recently delivered to the shelter. In addition, students from the Summit Academy recently contributed a large supply of used and new blankets to the shelter and also donated funds the students earned from the sale of a newsletter they designed.

Shelter officials said they were very grateful for all the much-needed help from the community and stressed the continued need at the facility.

Wadsworth also thanked the administration and Mayor Robert McCraight for the recent installation of signs directing motorists and the public to the animal shelter, something he had been advocating and requesting for several years.

“There were no signs to get to the animal shelter and people would ask where it was and how to get there. Now people can find it,” he said. “I also want to thank the DPW workers for installing the signs and everyone else involved,” he said.

“I appreciate it, and so do the dogs and cats.”

The shelter is located at 12300 Wayne Road in Romulus. For more information, call (734) 942-7591. Photos of animals available for adoption can be found on the Romulus Animal Shelter Facebook page.
