Police said a preliminary investigation indicates that alcohol may have been a factor in an early morning Thanksgiving Day crash that killed two area residents.
A 28-year-old man from Belleville reportedly entered M-14 near Beck Road at about 2:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 24 going the wrong way on the highway. Michigan State Police reports said that as troopers responded to the wrong way driver complaints, witnesses in the area reported a head-on crash.
The two vehicles involved collided and left the Belleville driver dead at the scene, according to police reports. Troopers said the early investigation indicated that the 28-year-old was at fault as he was driving the wrong way in the middle lane on the westbound side of the road.
The driver of the second vehicle, a 44-year-old man from Canton Township, was also pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical responders. A passenger in the second vehicle, a 35-year-old man, was transported from the scene of the crash to a local hospital. His condition was reported as critical.
