The award was presented in honor of Anderson's continued involvement with the local NAACP branch, as well as

Anderson has been an NAACP member since 1992. The Western Wayne branch was named Michigan NAACP Branch of the Year in 2018.

Anderson joined the Wayne County Commission in 2016 after serving eight years in the Michigan Senate and six in the Michigan House. He previously served nine years on the Westland City Council.
He is chair of the commission Special Committee on the Criminal Justice Complex and vice chair of the Committee on Economic Development. He is also a member of the Committee on Ways and Means and the Committee on Health and Human Services.
Anderson is a retired Ford Motor Co.
He and his wife, Gail, are parents of two adult children and have three grandchildren.
The Western Wayne NAACP branch represents 24 communities, including Allen Park, Belleville, Brownstown Township, Canton Township, Dearborn, Dearborn Heights, Ecorse, Garden City, Inkster, Lincoln Park, Livonia, Melvindale, New Boston, Northville, Plymouth, Redford Township, River Rouge, Romulus, Sumpter Township, Taylor, Van Buren Township, Wayne, Westland and Wyandotte.
