NAACP to host annual Freedom Fund dinner Oct. 20

     The NAACP Western Wayne County Branch will host their 22ND Annual Freedom Fund Dinner from 5-8 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 20. at The Prestige Banquet Hall located at 6600 Allen Road in Allen Park.
     Seating will begin at 4:30 p.m. and there will be a Mix and Mingle Soiree will take place from 7-8 p.m.
     Lt. Governor Garlin Gilchrist II will be the keynote speaker at the event which will honor Roy Wilson as the Lifetime Achievement Honoree; Congresswoman Rashida Tliab will be the Great Expectation Honoree; Wayne County Commissioner Glenn Anderson will be honored as the Leading Through Service/Elected Official Honoree; Jaylia Washington will be honored as the Trailblazer; the Seeds2Feed Foundation will be the Community Service Honoree and Judge Deborah Thomas will be the Freedom and Justice Honoree.

     The theme of the event is “Our Future Is NowStand With Us.”
Gina Wilson Steward, president of the Western Wayne County Branch of the NAACP said the organization is making an effort to increase involvement in the group.
“Our branch has been working to encourage people to get involved in their communities.  The emphasis is on using their voice at the voters' box and within local government to effect positive changes that will level the playing field as it relates to racial inequalities that plague our communities,” she said. 
     During the dinner, the group will officially recognize numerous people from the community for their outstanding accomplishments and spotlight their efforts towards bringing attention to discrimination issues. 
     “My goal as president is to continue to lead our branch's activities to provide equality for all citizens in the Western Wayne County area,” Steward said.
     A portion of the proceeds raised from the Freedom Fund Dinner will be used to fund youth programs for 2020, provide scholarships for deserving Western Wayne County students and provide the necessary funds that will allow the branch to respond to requests for assistance and focus our efforts on the Game Changes that coincide with the mission of the NAACP, organizers said.
     Tickets for the event are priced at $100 for adults and $50 for youth tickets.  Each ticket includes a one-year membership to the NAACP.
