Art contest is now under way in Canton

How do you spell CANTON?

Members of the Canton Commission for Culture, Arts, and Heritage are welcoming unique interpretations of the name using photos of objects in the community to spell out the township name. The letter art photography will continue to accept original artwork entries through Sept. 6.

Canton residents or groups with at least one Canton resident are asked to take pictures in the Canton community to create a unique sign spelling out C.A.N.T.O.N. for a chance to win a gift basket featuring a variety of gift cards valued at more than $100.

Participants are encouraged to photograph businesses, offices, landscapes, art, found items in nature, and any signs/symbols that represent each letter in the name Canton. The name can even be spelled in a different language, organizers said.

“We're hoping that area residents will think outside the box and photograph unique letter art as they explore Canton with everything it has to offer,” stated Samar Sakakini, Canton Commission for Culture, Arts, and Heritage chairperson.  “This spelling contest is a fantastic opportunity for participants to share their creativity, enjoy themselves out and about in Canton, and win a fun prize package.”

Contest participants may submit their original completed artwork to Facebook or Instagram using #howdoyouspellcanton along with the team or individual name hashtag. Entries should also identify the location of each letter found within the community or explain the inspiration. Final submission must spell out C.A.N.T.O.N. in one complete digital image.

One contest winner (individual or group) will be selected to receive a gift basket featuring a variety of gift cards valued at more than $100.  The winner(s) will be announced by Oct. 1 at www.canton-mi.org/181 and at www.facebook.com/cantonfun.

The Commission for Culture, Arts, and Heritage serves the Canton Community and leads the effort to weave all forms of art and heritage into the fabric of the Greater Canton Community, according to the website. Members of the Canton Commission for Culture, Arts, and Heritage currently meet at 7 p.m. the second Monday of February, May, August and November via Zoom.
