Residents may have unclaimed assets

Romulus Treasurer Stacy Paigesaid she was surprised to recognize several local names when she recently accessed the Michigan.gov unclaimed property website, part of the state department of treasury.

Paige told members of the city council that a resident had contacted the office of Mayor LeRoy Burcroff with information that the city was listed as the owner of unclaimed property on the site. When Paige began the process of reclaiming the city items, she said “lots of names came up.”

She suggested that local residents access the unclaimed property section of the michigan.gov website to determine if they might have assets they are unaware of in the custody of the Michigan Department of the Treasury. The state website claims that there are millions of dollars in lost or forgotten assets from dormant bank accounts, uncashed checks, valuables left in safe deposit boxes and stock certificates which remain in state custody.

“I suggest everyone take a look at the site and reach out to family members and have them take a look,” she told the council. “And I'd like to thank the resident who shared this information.”
