New phone app offers location of train delays at city crossings

The frequent and long delays due to trains blocking roadways in Plymouth can now be avoided by technology.

City of Plymouth officials and Integrated Traffic Systems LLC have collaborated to help motorists locate and predict train delays.

The new Plymouth Trains app allows users to receive a notification and an estimated waiting time when a train is blocking a roadway in the community.

There are settings to allow users receive notifications constantly or for specific times or days of the week. Another optional setting uses the motorist’s location and sends a notification when within range of a blocked crossing. The “chance of train” feature can help drivers plan trips by seeing the likelihood of a blocked crossing.

The app is still in development and is currently active for only the Farmer Street crossing. A city spokesman said work on infrastructure and technology issues to cover the remaining crossings in the city is under way.

The app is available on the Apple App Store and an Android version is in the works, he added.
