Applications to join Westland Police Department accepted

The Westland Police Department is seeking a few good men and women interested in a career in law enforcement.

The department recently exhausted the most recent police officer eligibility list with hirings this month and will be starting the process to establish the next hiring eligibility list, police officials said in a prepared statement.

As part of the process, applicants will be required to take the written portion of their testing through EMPCO (http://empco.net/). Applicants should ensure that they meet all the requirements for the Westland position before paying for and taking the written test.

•  Applicants must be a citizen of the United States

Not less than 21 years of age

High school diploma or GED

Valid drivers license 

Police academy graduate and MCOLES certified (or certifiable at time of hire), or a law enforcement academy attendee at time of application.

The Westland Police Officers Association signed a four-year collective bargaining agreement on May 5 of 2020. This new contract included major improvements to police officers' benefits, including a top salary of $72,671, with a total compensation package of $87,093. Westland officers have a defined benefit pension plan with a multiplier of 2.25 or an option of a defined contribution plan with employer match. There is a top vacation accrual of 260 hours per year; 18 hours of sick time per month; 15 paid holidays;  72 hours of personal time per year and a bonus of 48 hours of vacation time per year will be added to officers' bank if less than 48 hours of sick time are used in a calendar year.

Candidates must apply by 4 p.m.  Monday Nov. 15 to be eligible for the upcoming hiring process.
