Farm fun

Country Fair will mark anniversary

A Country Fair is planned at Maybury Farm on Saturday to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Northville Community Foundation.

The event, planned for 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Aug. 13 will feature games, activities, music, face painting, a magician, wagon rides and visits with the farm animals, all in celebration of the foundation which operates the working farm.

When a fire gutted the farm, then owned by the state, 25 years ago, the entire community mourned the loss of the 75-year-old facility and the farm animals destroyed.

The Northville Foundation, then under the direction of Shari Peters, assumed responsibility for the farm and depended on fundraisers and corporate donations to continue operations. Professionals moved donated barns down highways, displacing utility wires along the way, and teams of volunteers from Ford Motor Co. and other industries continued to supply labor to bring the farm back to operation and replace the lost animals.

The farm, now nearly completely restored, has been a landmark in the community for more than a century and continues to be a destination for children, students and families to experience the joy and wonder of animals, agriculture, farmland and forests.

The farm is operated entirely on admittance fees, donations and fundraisers to continue feeding the animals and providing educational experiences to the community.

Reservations to help celebrate the event and enjoy the activities are now available at a reduced price online for $10 per person or $13 if purchased at the gate the day of the fair.
