Officials break ground on first city dog park

City officials and members of the Rotary Club attended the official
ground breaking for the first off-leash dog park in the city last  week.
When Westland officials claimed that the city was going to the dogs last week, they intended it as a compliment.

A large crowd attended the ground breaking last week at the site of the first official dog park in the city, the Westland Rotary Canine Corral.

The new facility which will feature a dog water station and a perimeter fence to keep both furry friends and residents safe, is expected to be open to the public by the end of the year.

The off-leash dog park will also feature a half-acre for small dogs to run and a full-acre in which larger dogs can exercise. There will be agility courses in both sections, according to plans. The new park will also include benches throughout the area. The Westland Rotary Club contributed $10,000 to the $246,000 cost of the new facility which is being constructed by the Sole Building Co. of Westland. The bid was awarded to Sole during a council meeting earlier this year.

The city expense for the park is part of the Parks and Recreation Department Capital Improvement Budget for fiscal year 2022-2023.

The park will be located next to the Westland Recycling Center on Marquette Street.

“The All-American City looks forward to offering this great new amenity to the Westland residents and their special four-legged friends as well,” said Westland Mayor William R. Wild.
