Ice Arena with an official ribbon cutting.
Westland officials and members of the community were on hand last week to celebrate the completion of the final phase of improvements to the Mike Modano Ice Arena with a ribbon cutting ceremony.
The arena has been undergoing numerous upgrades and repairs and in April, members of the city council contracted with J.S. Vig Construction for the consulting and project management services associated with the most recent project.
The renovations included the remodeling of the ice arena lobby and bathrooms. At the same meeting, council members also approved a budget amendment to increase capital improvement funding for project costs and the purchase of a new Zamboni in the amount of $127,568. The total cost of the project was estimated at $220,000 with $50,000 that was previously budgeted and the award of a $42,432 grant from Wayne County Parks.
Since 2010, the arena has seen more than $1.75 million in upgrades including: 2010 - new compressors, dehumidifier and cooling tower; 2015 -new LED lighting installed over arena ice surface, remodeled Breakaway CafĂ©, free WiFi, new heating units for the spectator area and new rubber matting on players' benches; 2016 - four-pro style locker rooms and bathrooms, community room. two purified water fountains, repurposing of the original locker rooms into coach/referee rooms equipped with new flooring, doors and bathroom features and a storage facility for an additional Zamboni; 2017 - painted interior/exterior of building; 2019  lobby/bathrooms remodeled/renovated and new Zamboni purchased.
“Westland continues to diligently invest in its recreational amenities,” commented Mayor William R. Wild. “These improvements have been made possible through funding from federal, state and county grants along with proceeds from the annual charity hockey game and donations from the Mike Modano Foundation.”
