City holiday tree lighting goes virtual in 2020

The official Christmas tree in the City of Romulus has been turned on by Santa himself.

While the tree lighting and Santa welcome to the city was much different this year in light of the health restrictions posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Santa still managed to arrive and receive the key to the city from Mayor LeRoy Burcroff. He was joined in the pre-recorded event by Superintendent of Romulus Community Schools Dr. Benjamin Edmondson and Gretchen Notaro, principal at Romulus Elementary School. Two special helpers, Ezabella and Gavin, were also on hand for the seasonal event welcoming the holidays to the community.

Burcroff urged residents to enjoy the tree lighting virtually during a recent meeting of the members of the city council and noted that the pandemic had changed the traditional presentation, forcing the video presentation of the event that usually draws a large live audience from the community. He assured children that Santa had officially received the key to the city and was on schedule for deliveries in Romulus.

The city is also celebrating the holidays with Facebook holiday decorating contest.  Voting for the best decorated homes in the city will be accepted on Facebook until Jan. 3. The winners will be determined by Facebook votes. To enter, send a photo of the home to tcofield@romulusgov.com.
